After nearly 50 years of development, China has become the world's largest producer, consumer and exporter of rare earths. The output of rare earth smelting and separation products accounts for more than 90% of the world's total rare earth. But in the early 1990s, China's rare-earth metals industry was small in scale, backward in production technology and low in product purity.

Zhang shirong, a spokesman for the Beijing general institute of nonferrous metals research, said that in order to change China's backward production technology, equipment and low-grade products of rare earth metals and their alloys, and to break the technical blockade of foreign countries, China has made a series of important progress in strengthening research and development.

Zhang shirong said that through technological breakthroughs, China has improved the level of rare earth metal smelting and product grade. The purity of high purity rare earth metals in magnetic steel is ≥99.99%. China's rare earth neodymium iron boron magnets have entered the foreign monopoly of the high-tech field.
